I never considered myself an entrepreneur. I hold a doctorate and practiced as a Chiropractor for 20+ years in an office I built from scratch. I designed, built and ran a cafe. Now, I am an investor thanks to the open mindedness of my youngest son, Cody. Apparently if you build and open 3 businesses you can consider yourself an entrepreneur!
After selling the cafe, my husband and I were working for a local realtor who included a property management division and flipped homes too. We were on his team and flipped 6 properties with him in a little over a year. Through this experience, I learned how to design kitchens and bathrooms. I learned about finishes and color schemes. I learned about what to do and what not to do. As my husband and I worked on each project we found ourselves having conversations about what we would do differently if we were making the decisions. We even discussed opening our own business in the future.
Cody is an idea guy. He has been coming up with inventions and ideas since he was a little boy. Cody loves watching Shark Tank and found out that a group associated with the show was offering free seminars in Sacramento and secured himself a ticket. He decided at the last minute that since he was not 18 years old that maybe they would not allow him into the seminar so he asked me to go with him. The seminar was broken into two section. The first hour was on real estate investing and the second hour was on how to become an entreprenuer which is why Cody wanted to attend.
(please look for later blogs with a couple of warnings and specific questions to ask to protect your future self and business)
At the intermission, Cody looked at me and said, 'We should do that'. He explained how his dad and I were already doing all the work to flip houses, and wanted to know why we didn't own our business. Out of the mouths of babes. I firmly believe that teenagers are some of the most amazing people (yes, I know, I'm in the minority in that thought), but I listened to what my son was saying even though it was a little insane. We ended up purchasing a money back guaranteed class for $2000 (we each put in $1000) and simply, that's how it all began.
If a teenage boy and a mom can start a business whether it's investing or something different, you can too.
Please look for the next blog detailing the steps we took to open a legitamate business. Until next time, be safe!
